Characterizing dementia caregiver style in managing care challenges: Cognitive and behavioral components

Background Caring for a person living with dementia can take physical and emotional toll, but understudied is the process by which family caregivers actually provide care. Caregiver management styles may vary affect care decision-making, experiences, receptivity to participation in interventions, outcomes caregiver dementia. Methods Participants included 100 primary persons who were on average 64 years old had been providing 55 months, 74% women, 18% nonwhite. interviewed Michigan Ohio regarding their cognitive behavioral of recent challenge values guiding decision-making. The rigorous accelerated data reduction technique was used analyze qualitative leading identification caregiving styles. Styles compared across sample characteristics using chi-square ANOVA tests. Findings Five distinct emerged: “Externalizers” (superficial understanding, self-focused, frequent expressions anger or frustration), “Individualists” (provide going alone, emotionally removed, lack strategies), “Learners” (recognize need change approach are stuck turbulent), “Nurturers” (positive empathy toward reflect natural mastery), “Adapters” (arsenal acquired strategies adapt challenges). Style groups differed significantly terms age use formal supports. Discussion We identified five addressed challenges robust methodology. be important identify order better tailor interventions needs abilities.
